Shhh…… Best of Wales’ best kept secrets!

Who are the people that know the highlights of Wales better than anyone? Our property owners of course, and we’re starting a new feature here at Best of Wales, showcasing a different part of Wales, giving a great insight into the best places to visit, eat, explore and enjoy during your stay.

We start with two cottages, Bwthyn y Traeth and Bwthyn yr Harbwr in Burry Port, West Wales. Set on the coast in a beautiful location both properties are close to Pembrey Country Park and right next to the harbour and beaches of Burry Port.

We’ve asked our wonderful owner for some of her hints and tips and the best places to visit from the delightful 5 star cottages, read on to find out more:

The highlights from Bwthyn yr Habwr and Bwthyn y Traeth

1) Your favourite local walk?

The Millennium coastal path is a lovely walk directly from the cottages, in either direction. Head west you can walk past Ashburnham Golf course to Pembrey Country Park and the 8 mile stretch of golden sands at Cefn Sidan beach (a favourite for Top Gear beach filming). Head East you can walk through Burry Port Woods to the Llanelli Wetlands Centre. Either way the scenery looking out towards Gower is spectacular. The sand banks and dunes change shape constantly so there is always something new to look at.

2) It’s a glorious day, where would be first on your list to visit?

If I had small children to amuse I would take them to Pembrey Country Park. Pembrey Country Park is right on the doorstep and has attractions all year round. There is a dry ski slope and toboggan run (which is great fun for children of all ages), an Equestrian Centre, Segway rides, miniature railway, miniature golf course and crazy golf. It is the perfect destination for a family picnic.

3) Best place to sit and relaxing, watching life pass by?

The harbour and marina in Burry Port is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. You may be lucky and see the Lifeboat being launched. There is a wonderful cafe near to the Lighthouse adjacent to the Marina which serves excellent home made food.

4) Best place for cake?

There are several good cafes in and around Burry Port. A favourite of mine is the Pavilions cafe on the Millennium Coastal Path.

5) Best place to visit on a rainy day?

The rain seldom remains all day at the coast, but when it is raining the Industrial Museum at Kidwelly is a good place to visit. With small children LC2 in Swansea is a good bet, you could make the trip more interesting by travelling by train. The railway station is only a few minutes walk from the cottage.

6) Somewhere that’s a bit of the beaten track? (not your usual tourism attraction)

Ffos Las horse racing track, the newest in the UK is only 10 minutes away by car and can make for an interesting day out. Likewise Pembrey racing circuit is even closer and hosts International race events for both cars and motorcycles.

7) Best place for a great meal?

If you want a special meal then head to Sosban near Millennium Quay in Llanelli. The Cornish Arms in Burry Port has a good fish menu and The Neptune near the Railway Station offers good pub grub.

8) Best place for a Welsh welcome?

Parc y Scarlet in Llanelli is home to the famous Scarlets Rugby Team. What better way to soak in the Welsh atmosphere than heading to a match and watch the rugby.

9) Your all time favourite local place?

The Millennium Coastal Path in its entirety is a very special place. The people you pass are always friendly, the coastal scenery is beautiful and the sunsets are amazing. Its a very tranquil place. I am so lucky to have it on my doorstep!
